You may not realize this but new basement finishing can actually create the perfect environment for mold growth. This may surprise some people who associate this fungus growth with basements that are neglected. The fact is though that finishing your basement could increase your mold problems unless you take measures to create an environment in which the fungus can’t prosper. Many of the construction materials used in basement remodeling are made from wood and mold just loves dead organic material; especially if it is soaked with moisture. This mold could easily be growing behind your wood panels and causing health problems for you and your family without you ever suspecting the cause.

Don’t fret though; there are things you can do to ensure that your new basement finishing is not going to be that perfect habitat for mold. Your major concern will be reducing the amount of moisture in your basement. Check for leaks. If you are not sure if the moisture is coming from outside or is due to condensation then there is a test you can perform. Cover your wall with some plastic sheeting and leave it for a day or two. If there is water on the outside of the sheet you will know you are dealing with condensation; while if it is inside the sheet you have water coming from outside.

Dealing with water coming from outside can be a bit of a headache, but in many instances it will just involve taking simple measures during your new basement finishing. The first thing you will need to ensure is that the ground outside your house slopes away from house. You will also need to cheek the walls and roof in your basement for any leaks and waterproof fully. If you are still having mold problems with outside water getting into your basement then you may need to add some drains.

Condensation in your basement may be caused by high humidity so you might want to consider installing a dehumidifier; you can first purchase a humidifier meter to see if this is a problem. Make sure that your laundry room vents are going outside and if you have a shower in your basement you will need to ensure that you have a vent to send condensation outside. If you have any cold pipes running through your basement then you may want to insulate these. It might also be a good idea to keep the room warm because hot air holds more water than cold air.
