To use a kilowatt meter, just plug it into the wall and then plug your appliance into the meter. You can watch the consumption of energy from that appliance. You’ll be surprised by how much some appliances draw even when they are turned off. Be sure to check your computer, fax machines, fans, microwaves and small heaters.

Taking Action to Save Energy

Take note of which appliances are drawing the most energy when turned on and when turned off. You can either try to remind yourself to turn off these appliances or you can use a simple solution like a power strip. Plug your television, DVD player and cable or satellite box into a power strip and then simply flip the switch when you are done with the appliances. The circuit will be closed and the appliances won’t be able to take any more energy from your system.
