In the background of the Play is Denmark’s long-standing feud with neighboring Norway, and an invasion by the Norwegian prince, Fortinbras. The protagonist of Hamlet is Prince Hamlet of Denmark, son of the recently deceased King Hamlet. Prince Hamlet is the nephew of King Claudius, his father’s brother and successor. After the death of King Hamlet, Claudius hastily marries King Hamlet’s widow, Gertrude.
The play opens on a cold night at the Danish royal castle, Elsinore. The guards try to persuade Hamlet’s friend Horatio that they have seen King Hamlet’s ghost. After hearing from his friend of the Ghost’s appearance, Hamlet resolves to see the Ghost himself. That night, the Ghost appears to Hamlet and tells him that he is the spirit of his father. The ghost discloses that Claudius murdered King Hamlet by pouring poison in his ears.
The spirit demands that Hamlet avenge him. Prince Hamlet agrees and decides to fake madness to avert suspicion. Busy with affairs of state, Claudius and Gertrude try to avert an invasion by Prince Fortinbras. Claudius gradually gets disturbed by Hamlet’s continuing deep mourning for his father and his increasingly erratic behavior. He sends two student friends of his, named Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to discover the cause of Hamlet’s changed behavior.
Prince Hamlet greets these new people warmly, but quickly discerns that they have turned against him. Another character called Polonius shows up. Polonius is Claudius’ trusted chief counselor. His daughter, Ophelia, is courted by Hamlet. Neither Polonius nor his son thinks Hamlet is serious about Ophelia. Ophelia, too, is alarmed by Hamlet’s strange behavior. Polonius assumes that the ‘ecstasy of love’ is responsible for Hamlet’s madness.
Hamlet is confused whether to believe on what Ghost says or not, then arrives a troupe of actors at the castle and presents him with a solution. He decides to stage a play, recreating his father’s murder, and determine Claudius’ guilt or innocence by studying his reaction. The court assembles to watch the play. Hamlet provides a running commentary throughout and when the murder scene is presented, Claudius abruptly rises and leaves the room. Hamlet sees this reaction as proof of his uncle’s guilt. Claudius, fearing for his life, banishes Hamlet to England and orders to kill him.
After killing Polonius, Hamlet is urged by the ghost to treat Gertrude gently but reminding him to kill Claudius. Unable to see or hear the Ghost herself, Gertrude takes Hamlet’s conversation as further evidence of madness. What would be the next?...This is what you have to find for yourself. Hamlet
Hamlet The Musical proves the fact that classic remains classic. The heart-melting tragedy by the great poet and dramatist William Shakespeare has been an inspiration for many writers, philosophers and filmmakers before it was written for the stage. Hamlet is a masterpiece because of its complex characterization and twisty, tragic plot. This masterpiece is recreated once again as a musical that compels the audience to relive Shakespeare and his magical aura.
Hamlet is a story of love and loss. The plot contains various themes that include revenge, love, politics and treachery. However, unique is the inclusion of ghosts, both real and figurative. Besides this, the humor has its fare share as well. Not to be forgotten are the famous dialogues that now become profound sayings including "Frailty, thy name is woman!", "To thine own self be true", "Brevity is the soul of wit", "The play's the thing" and, of course, "To be, or not to be, that is the question."
