Many of us have great plans for our basement, but we just never get around to doing anything about it. We use our basement as a temporary storage area promising ourselves each time we go down there that one day we will actually do something more constructive with the space. Maybe we envision a nice den or maybe even a guest room so visitors don’t have to sleep in our living room. What happens is that eventually we stop going down there altogether because the basement is just too full of junk. What we fail to realize is that an unwelcome guest has taken up residence downstairs and if we leave it there it could end up affecting all the family’s health and eventually costing a huge sum of money to fix. This is why basement remodeling is often necessary if you want to avoid that dreaded mold.

This might come as a surprise but basement remodeling could actually save you a lot of money in the long run. This is because most basements offer the ideal environment for mold; if this gets out of control it can cost a fortune to put right. When you decide to do some basement remodeling you not only free us some extra living space, but you will also be able to take measures to make this an area where mold fears to go.

The reason why many basements have mold is that they are often damp with poor ventilation; this is the ideal habitat for this fungi. When you are doing your basement remodeling you can create a completely different environment that is ventilated and dry. The before and after picture of a renovated basement can be stunning and you will be left wondering why you left it so long.

If mold has already taken hold in your basement then you will first need to get rid of this completely prior to beginning your basement remodeling. If the mold is only in a small area then you should be able to deal with this yourself using some bleach and water solution; soak the area with the solution for at least fifteen minutes before removing it. There is always the risk that mold could be toxic so always treat it carefully. Use a face mask and protective eye glasses to prevent mold spurs from causing problems. Once you have completely removed the mold you can begin your basement remodeling.
