Mold can have serious implications for your health. It is most dangerous when it is left to grow unchecked and unseen. Attic mold could be causing problems above your head right now and you are not even aware of what is happening. If you or your family are frequently becoming ill with no real explanation as to the cause then mold could be causing the problem. If people in your office are always off sick then this could also be due to mold; many instances of sick building syndrome have later turned out to be due to mold.
So what is this mold stuff anyway?
Mold is a type of fungus that can grow on any dead organic material. It only needs a few basic necessities in order to thrive; water and a temperature above five degrees Celsius. It loves poorly ventilated places best and this is why you will often have attic mold growing above your head.
Is attic mold dangerous?
Yes, attic mold has been associated with many health problems. The most chilling are its link with miscarriage and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Mold can also cause allergies, exacerbation of breathing conditions like asthma, and infections. Black mold is particularly worrying because this can be toxic and cause a whole spectrum of health problems. It is not possible to distinguish non-toxic mold from toxic mold by just looking so the advice is to treat all mold as it is toxic.
Why do I have attic mold?
The two most common causes of attic mold are poor ventilation and leaks; remember that mold needs moisture to grow and prosper. Attic mold is usually a bigger problem during the winter months because of the big temperature differences between the attic and the rest of the house. Hot air causes condensation to reach the attic where it turns into water. There also tends to be a lot of pipes in the attic which can leak and cause problems.
What should I do if I have attic mold?
The good news is that it is usually quite easy to eradicate mold. In the past people recommended that you use bleach, but these days people advise that you use a strong detergent instead because it will be more effective. You will need to allow the disinfectant time to soak in and kill the attic mold and make sure that you fully protect yourself with a face mask and eye protectors.
