Aprons have been a cook’s best friend for hundreds of years. Indeed aprons were used by both men and women long before they were seen on television in the 1950’s. In the olden days it used to be associated with women who were supposed to be the homemakers and one rarely saw them without an apron. It used to be longer than it is today almost like an extra garment worn above the dress. More emphasis was given to its function which was that of protecting the outfit worn inside from gathering dirt from everyday household chores. Since there were no washing machines or advanced cloth materials that were easy to wash in those days it was essential to protect them by wearing these long aprons.

As technology grew the length of the apron shortened, and thus knee length aprons began to come into existence. Aprons can be made up of cotton or a mixture of cotton and polyester thus making it easier to wash. Rubber aprons are used in factories. Almost all housemaids, waitresses, butchers are seen sporting aprons. There are two types of aprons, viz. one that starts at the waist below and the other is the bib apron that starts from the neck to the knee. The latter consists of a strap at the neck and two ribbons at the waist to be tied behind.

Today’s aprons unlike the ones in the past are more into fashion than just functionality. Aprons for all kinds of people are available like kid apron, men apron, bridal apron, mother-daughter apron sets, one sided aprons, reversible aprons, teen aprons and so on. The various designs available in the market makes apron wearing experience a fashion statement thus making the process of household chores like cooking rather interesting. Men are more interested in cooking these days and they tend to use these aprons as well. Though women aprons comes in large varieties of designs men’s apron are normally either striped or plain.

There is another kind of apron known as BBQ (barbeque) aprons that are thicker in fabric so that it protects from grease and grilling splatters. Apart from men, children are also seen to wear bibs and aprons unlike in the olden times.
