Your phone displays its signal strength as a series of bars on your screen. And we have all experienced the frustration that accompanies a loss of signal. All of our mobile phones depend on good network coverage to keep us all in touch. Some networks provide more consistent coverage than others, although things are improving all the time.

The strength or quality of your signal depends on the strength of your mobile phone network coverage. Usually, the closer you are to a mobile phone tower belonging to your network provider, the stronger the signal you receive will be. However, there are other factors that can affect your signal quality.

You will tend to find that phone coverage is more reliable in urban areas. Although, this is not always the case, as all urban areas, even busy cities like London, have dead zones where no mobile signal gets through. This does not mean that there are no mobile phone towers in the area, but that somehow the signal transmitted by the mobile tower is not being picked up by your phone, as it is being blocked by something.

In a bustling city, these interferences tend to come from obstructive buildings, in particular the tall variety. And if these buildings are tightly packed-in around you, then your phone signal has even more work to do to get through to your phone.

And it is not just cities that have problems. Villages and rural areas, remote or otherwise, all experience signal interference. In the green pastures of the UK countryside however, the culprits are the mountainous and hilly areas of land, and clusters of forest.

But things are improving, as the importance of being able to access a good signal while in the countryside is just as important, if not more important, than if you are in the town. The importance of this has been shown with mountain rescue teams being able to save stranded hillwalkers, thanks to the fact that they could get a signal on their phone to call for help.

At the moment, none of the mobile phone network providers have one hundred percent coverage of the UK. However more and more antennas and bases are being constructed all the time.

The advent of 3G technology forced many companies to improve their coverage dramatically too, so coverage is now better than it has ever been.
