The new, open source Google Android mobile OS can already boast a veritable cornucopia of third party freeware apps, from the trivial to the genuinely useful. Here are just some of the apps currently available from the Android Market:

Bartender - This touchscreen or trackball-controlled app gives you recipes for all types of drinks, from the simple classics to the most exotic concoctions. There is also bookmark function, so you can get easy access to your favourite drinks recipes.

Bubble - If you ever need to settle an argument about a wonky pool table, then you should download this app, which turns your Android phone into a fully functioning, not to mention flashy looking, spirit level, using the in built accelerometer as a measuring device.

Learn US Civics - This edu-tainment app(it can hardly be called a game) features a hundred question and answer cards about the American government, and no scoring system, so it has little lasting appeal but could prove handy if you have a history or politics test coming up.

Magic 8-Ball - If you are the type to use a popular stocking filler as an oracle in your daily life, then you should download this stunningly realistic Magic 8 Ball Simulator, which uses the accelerometer to allow you to shake the phone/magic 8 ball to achieve the required result. Does the Job

Mario Simulator - One of the most pointless apps ever made for a mobile phone, all this does is make the blinging noise from Nintendos Mario series of games, and play a rather hurried version of the theme tune.

MobileBoy - If you pine for your old Nintendo Gameboy, then you will probably want to get a hold of this nifty emulator for the Android. It plays all the old games, although some of them can be a bit fiddly to play using the touchscreen.

Mobile C64 - As the name suggests, this app turns your Android Mobile into a miniature Commodore 64, and can play all the old games and programs. Perfect for reliving a mis-spent youth!
