Travelling can be an expensive business, but it is unavoidable in some lines of work. Thankfully, there are a number of steps that you can take to keep your travelling costs low, thus making your travails more profitable from a personal point of view. Here are just a few:

Avoid luggage fees. The most obvious way to do this is to travel light, and only carry around hand luggage if possible. However, if you are going to be away for a while, or need to lug samples around with you, then you can avoid luggage fees by simply avoiding airlines that charge fees for luggage, or by travelling in business class.

Book in advance. If you know your schedule in advance, then it is a good idea to book your flights as soon as possible, as travel tickets tend to get more expensive as the travel date looms.

Use self service apartments. Small business apartments with cooking facilities can enable you to save a lot of money on your food bills, and allow you to eat a lot healthier into the bargain.

Take public transportation. If a city that you are visiting has a reliable subway or bus infrastructure, be sure to make the most of it, as not only is it a lot cheaper, but it tends to be a lot quicker too.

Keep your internet costs low. The Wi-Fi services in airports can be very handy, as you can catch up with all your correspondence while waiting for your flight, but it can be expensive if you rent it by the hour. If you travel by air a lot, getting yourself a monthly Wi-Fi subscription can save you a lot of cash. Also, take advantage of any free internet services that are available from hotels and public libraries, as these tend to be both quick and reliable.

Stay away from valet parking. While it is a nice luxury to have the parking aspect of a car journey done for you when you turn up at a hotel or restaurant, it can be hideously expensive, so unless you are a real high roller, it pays to park your own car.

Get the smaller hire car. Most car hire centres will offer you a mid sized car as the default option, but if you opt to go for their smallest car, you can save a heap of money, and you might even get a free upgrade if they have run out of the small ones.
