If you have discovered mold in your attic then you will need to do something about it. If you just ignore it this could mean that it will end up costing you a fortune to remedy, and more importantly it could lead to sickness for both you and your loved ones. This is why it really is important that you begin your attic clean up as soon as possible. In some instances you will be able to deal with the problem yourself while other times your attic clean-up will require some expert assistance.
The first thing you will need to do as part of your attic clean up is an assessment. You will need to see where the mold is in your attic. You might be shocked to find that there is a lot more of your attic covered with mold than you expected. If it seems to be all over the attic then you really should consider calling in the professionals. Mold likes to stay on any dead organic material so you might find that much of the furniture that you have been storing in the attic has been colonized. The first thing you will want to do is remove everything that you are sure has not been touched by the mold so as to prevent further contamination. Until the mold is eradicated you will want to keep your attic sealed as much as possible. It is very easy for mold to become airborne and this can cause many negative consequences for people’s health.
If you are going to try and deal with the mold yourself then you will need to do all you can to protect yourself during your attic clean up. Make sure you wear a respiratory mask and eye protector. You will need a bleach solution to kill the mold. The best advice is to soak all the areas where you see mold with the solution and leave for fifteen minutes. The mold should then be dead and you can rinse it off. If you want to stop the mold returning you can apply a borate-based mold solution everywhere and don’t rinse it off. If you don’t have bleach at home you could also try using vinegar as this is meant to work just as well; just mix it with water. You can also put either solution into a spray bottle to make the job easier and to make it less likely that you are going to be sending spores into the air; just make sure you spray gently.
